Remove the radio and check the Serial Number on the label on the casing

Took the radio out and the serial number is correct. Tried a wrong code (not 3627) and it started toting up wrong entries. When I enter correct code then hit 5 to enter the radio goes dark, switches off and comes back on with CODE---- again. Any idea what would cause this or how to fix it would be greatly appreciated.
